Vroman's, Pasadena CA

my bookstore the summer I became a fanatic reader

Vromans Bookstores logoI just saw the finalists for this years’ WNBA Pannell Awards, which recognize bookstores that “enhance their communities by bringing exceptional creativity to foster a love of reading in their young patrons,” and couldn’t be more delighted to see Vroman’s on the list. If you live anywhere near Los Angeles and don’t know Vroman’s, you should. It’s been around since 1894 (yes, really: 1894), and was my local bookstore the summer I first became a fanatic reader (warning: silly photo link).
Vromans Bookstores EventsTerrific booksellers! Just walk in and tell them what books you’ve liked, and they will put something new in your hands. They. Know. Books. They hosts a gazillion events, too, and support local authors. And this isn’t the first time they are looking at standing on an awards podium. They were named Publishers Weekly’s Bookseller of the Year in 2008.
Three bookstores. Lots of great books. And cafes where you can sit and peruse. Is there a better way to spend a Tuesday afternoon? – Meg
Independent bookstores help new writers find an audience, and keep literature vibrant. If you don’t live near this one, please see the list of others in the sidebar under “Bookstores Worth Browsing.” Don’t see your favorite here yet? Please email me and I’ll do my best to have it featured here.
