The summer I studied for the bar exam, I went to my bar review class in the morning and then drove over the hill with my books, set up a beach chair on the sand, and studied in the reflection of sunlight off the waves. Yes, my BAR/BRI books ended up stained with sunscreen, but to this day I haven’t heard anyone who pushed through that last intense study-to-become-a-lawyer period in a more relaxing atmosphere.
I’m just back from a week at the beach with family, reminded of how peaceful and inspiring it is to do almost anything in sight and hearing of the surf. I’m quite enjoying being back to writing, in no small part because I have a first draft and am into revisions, and thinking how very much writing a novel is like digging at the edge of the ocean. Just as your little shovel to uncovers something, a wave washes in and covers it up again, before you can even quite make out what it is. And of course there is nothing to do but dig into the sand again.
I’m also left thinking I would pay a small fortune for a sand-repellent laptop. Or better yet, a waterproof one. Perhaps I should set my son, who is spending the summer making things like 3-D printers, to this task? – Meg
