Happy St. Patty’s Day! In honor of my Irish roots and in keeping with the Quotes by Women year I have going on, here are a few bits of wisdom from Irish women:
I’m troubled, I’m dissatisfied. I’m Irish!” – Marianne Moore
I think being a woman is like being Irish… Everyone says you’re important and nice, but you take second place all the time.” – Iris Murdoch
When anyone asks me about the Irish character, I say look at the trees. Maimed, stark and misshapen, but ferociously tenacious.” – Edna O’Brien
People do not change, they are merely revealed.” – Anne Enright
To be quite oneself one must first waste a little time.” – Elizabeth Bowen
Scared is what you’re feeling. Brave is what you’re doing.” – Emma Donoghue
And this one–an old Irish proverb–was I’m sure first offered by a woman:
May you be forty years in heaven before the devil knows you’re dead.”
Tomorrow, I’ll be back to going around my luncheon table.
