Book Soundtracks? What’s Next?

April 20th, 2009 by me

The video trailer for The Wednesday Sisters has been available since the hardcover released (now redone for the paperback, and available here) and the novel is available in audio – CD or downloadable. But one of the newest crazes in book marketing, I’m told, is the book soundtrack: a music playlist created with music from the book or music that evokes the emotion of the book or, as near as I can tell, just music the author likes to listen to.

The idea is that all the many folks cruising for music on itunes will stumble across a book playlist and become as interested in the read as they are in the listen. Do they? I put mine up yesterday, and have already heard from one reader–who suggested I add something by an artist I had on the long list but cut in the final round. Well, it was a delightful way to spend a few hours anyway, digging up the songs Kath, Brett, Ally, Frankie and Linda listen to in the book, and mixing them with other songs about friendship and reaching for our dreams. The result, fans of The Wednesday Sisters will, I hope, be delighted to see, does include the Johnny Carson Tonight Show Theme. Who knew that would be available on itunes?

The truth is getting started as a writer takes hard work, persistence, and a bit of luck.
