an amazing Colorado indie now at the airport, in case you’re just passing through
Anyone who has ever shopped at Tattered Cover knows to look for excuses to get to Denver just to get to this amazing store.
Tattered Cover started as a tiny place in Cherry Creek, which, by the time my stepson Grant moved there, was a big, swanky store with what every twenty-something book buyer needs: a restaurant and bar to go with the books! (Grant has always been a great reader, and would no doubt have gone to buy books even without the bar, but I do think it may have been an additional draw!)
The bar hasn’t survived (nor the restaurant), but the bookstore has thrived thanks to its amazing booksellers (they know books), terrific events (yes, I am hoping someday they will host me), and such a wonderful selection of books that if you can’t find what you want … well, of course they’ll order it for you.
But things just got better for those of us who don’t actually live in Denver: Tattered Cover just opened a store in the Denver airport. So even if you are just connecting (and who doesn’t connect through Denver?), you can pick up a book at Tattered Cover.
Since there is a Books Inc. in the San Francisco airport, now I’m imagining–how sick is this?–living in a world where I just fly from San Francisco to Denver and back again on endless repeat, spending my days reading in seat 37A (an emergency exit row, with extra legroom) without ever having to go through security again. The greatest place to write is on an airplane, because you can’t get up much, and coffee is delivered to your seat with the mere press of a call button. Ditto with reading, so why not?
Independent bookstores help new writers find an audience, and keep literature vibrant. If you don’t live near this one, please see the list of others in the sidebar under “Bookstores Worth Browsing.” Don’t see your favorite here yet? Please email me and I’ll do my best to have it featured here.
