Following up on a conversation we had in the Novelist Group on SheWrites, I’ve put together a list of contests for unpublished book length fiction (including short story collections) which I believe to be worth the entry fee (if any). Many have as a prize publication of the winner. They appear in reverse alphabetical order (because my formative years were as a W):
![]()
- SheWrites We Love New Novelists Contest
- Michigan Literary Fiction Award
- James Jones Fellowship
- Iowa Short Fiction Award
- Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction
- Bellwether Prize
- Bakeless Prizes
- AWP Awards
- Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award
Good luck with your entries! – Meg

Nice work on the posts, Meg. My last book has gotten 3 “finalist” awards including runner-up at COVR Awards. I have stickers but no room on the cover for all of them. Nice problem to have! I’m sure you’ve won many awards, so how did you handle that? You’re a great marketer … wish I was. So much I need to do and not enough time or energy at my age!
Congrats, Judith, on the awards. I’ve actually never won an award, only gotten to finalist.
I truly enjoy looking through on this website, it has got fantastic posts. “Violence commands both literature and life, and violence is always crude and distorted.” by Ellen Glasgow.
